Terrail Lambert my favorite likely practice squad player started his night in the second half. The 1st drive he was in, he had a nice pass deflection when he jumped an out route. Forced a fumble that was negated by an offsides on Diyral Briggs. Then on a deep pass to Osgood he was called for defensive interference for shielding the ball from the receiver. Did have good position though was he jumped up and could of deflected it, if he had turned around. The play was strikingly resemblant to the one Clements gave up earlier. Lambert this preseason has only given up 2 catches for about 20 yards(Don't hold me to this stat, only saw a bit of the Cowboy vs Niner game), and I'm not even sure those catches were in his zone. Both 10 yard out patterns, but it looks like Lambert's dropping back to play a deep zone on both.
Reggie Smith our defensive playmaker forced a fumble that bounced out of bounds. From the way Reggie has stepped up this preseason, in my mind he's an upgrade over Goldson.
Briggs and Harris put a lot of pressure on the QB last night. Something that has been missing from the 49er defense. Two actual sacks, "Amazing." Briggs came off the edge from the right side and forced the fumble on one of them. (Harris did not accumulate a sack)
Gartrell Johnson, a Niner Nation favorite pre-draft, killed the 49er D in the 2nd half. Seemed as if everytime a defender stopped him in his tracks, he'd break free for 5 more yards down the field. With LT, Sproles, Bennett, Hester(FB/HB), and Johnson in the backfield playing HB, it'll be interesting to see who the Chargers keep.
Nate Clements beat by Osgood for a 39 yard score. Clements has been struggling this preseason, and with Zito doing a superb job pitching for the Giants(Baseball), this makes him the highest paid underachiever in San Francisco.
Goldson was out of position on a deep pass to Malcolm Floyd, but was able to get to Floyd just in time to force the drop.
Nate Davis had an exceptional 2 minute drill-like drive. With 2:34 remaining in the 2nd quarter, Nate Davis went 4/5 for 79 yards and a TD to Jason Hill. I became a Davis believer in this game, baptism by fire week 6,if Hill struggles.
Jason Hill personally my favorite receiver on the team behind Crabtree. Hill seems to be disgruntled about his playing time.
"Maybe the coaches don't like me or something," Hill said. "I don't know. I just haven't been getting enough reps. When I get reps, I make plays. I showed it last year when I get reps. When I get in a game, I make plays. I'm proving it on the field every time."
"I think there's a strong possibility," he said. "I haven't been getting any reps. I'll have my phone on high volume tomorrow waiting for the call. All I know is I make plays, and hopefully there are 31 other teams that see that.
"Oh, I'm pissed," he added. "I'm a ballplayer. I make plays. When I get on the field, I make plays."

Dallas Cowboys vs 49ers
Last night marked the starting teams worst performance of the preseason. A reoccurring theme this preseason, the 49ers getting no pressure on the opposing QB. The quarterback play from Hill wasn't there. The offensive line couldn't hold up against the NFL sack leading D-Line of a year ago. Our run defense seemed to be getting gashed by Marion Barber. Then there was Coffee whose day wasn't spectacular, like last week, but he does seem to be consistent even against an upper tier Dallas defense. Caught 3 passes out of the backfield which is surprising, because during his Crimson Tide days he was rarely thrown too.
Despite the bad performance by the starters in the 1st half, with 5 minutes : 44 seconds left in the 3rd quarter the scrubs came into play. Kory Sheets and Nate Davis gave the coaching staff a tough decision going into next week when they have to cut down on the roster. Davis showed off his powerful arm, hitting receivers in windows that both Smith nor Hill would even dare to. Kory Sheets quickness and speed, a given, but on his game winning 9 yard touchdown run he displayed a bit of power and determination. Too bad these are in positions that the team is already crowded in. I think Nate Davis won the 3rd sting job last night. Kory Sheets another story. Sheets has more potential at HB than Michael Robinson, but Robinson is the most versatile player on the team. Robinson is HB, FB, ST captain, emergency QB, and our Taser QB. If Sheets does get cut, most likely a team will sign him quickly on waivers.
Reggie Smith yet another takeaway on a fumble recovery. Should Goldson be weary?
Marvel Smith retired. His health was a concern from the beginning, a 321 lb offensive tackle recovering from multiple back surgeries. It never sounded promising, I blame Scot for this set back.
5 player cut. WR Mark Bradford, WR Chris Francies, K Alex Romero, CB Carlos Thomas, CB Jahi Word-Daniels
What is to blame for Shaun Hill's difficulties?
A. Alex Smith taking 1st team reps away
B. Shaun Hill's lack of quarterbacking ability
C. The talent around him
D. Jimmy Raye's ultra conservative offense
E. All of the above

49ers vs Raiders: Smith play by play
Alex Smith's 1st drive
- Rollouts right throws ball out of bounds
- Easy throw to open Vernon Davis for a 1st Down
- Throws behind Isaac Bruce
- Throws high to Vernon Davis
2nd Drive
- Smith Rolls into pressure(not sure if play was designed that way). Then throws ball to no one in the middle of the field.
- Throws bullet to Battle
- (Reverse to Battle) Alex Smith just lights up Greg Ellis.
- Throws bullet to coffee
- Throws ball too high to Morgan, gets picked off.
3rd Drive
- Throws out of bounds
END OF 1st QUARTER
-Adam Schefter reports that Shaun Hill will be named starter-
49ers dominated on the ground, didn't matter who was in the backfield. If Raye truly wants to run the ball, by all means go ahead.
Miscue by Clements allowed Russell to hook up with Murphy in the endzone for an uncontested touchdown pass.
Reggie Smith with 2 more big plays. His pass rush on the 2 point conversion attempt by Oakland and a recovered fumble on a punt.
Here is what I said about Glen Coffee while giving draft grades. "Pros - Thrives on getting those extra yards, explosive burst though holes
Cons - Was the 2nd best back on his own team, not too agile, lack of size for a power back
Amateur Analysis: North South runner who I don't believe compliments Gore very well, since they have similar running styles. Will be a successful back up running back" With the way Coffee played tonight wouldn't be surprised if he could actually be a more than capable starter.
Terrail Lambert has given up 1 catch that I've seen in the past 2 preseason games. That catch was on a 10 yard curl to the outside. Seemed as if Lambert was dropping into a deep zone, thus it may have not been his responsibility. Keep an eye on #41 next week vs the Cowboys.
-------------------------
Flashing back to when I came up with my list of Musts and Busts in the 2009 Draft. Both Deon Butler and Tyrell Sutton living up to the hype I gave them. Deon Butler tonight had 2 catches 47 yards 1 TD. While Sutton rushed for 140 yards and has 1 TD this preseason.

49ersboard is back: 49ers vs Bronco breakdown
Shaun Hill's 1st and only drive,
Hit Vernon Davis with the 2 passes he attempted for a total of 41 yards. Hill did get sacked twice on this drive, Keasey missing a block on one and Hill holding onto the ball doesn't help.
Alex Smith
Shaky as usual. Even on his TD to Brit Miller, he double clutches and throws it low at the ankles. There was another pass to Morgan that should have been picked off. For this reason, when Smith released the ball Champ Bailey was blanketing Morgan. When the pass did arrive Champ just barely moved out of the way(not knowing the ball was in flight), alwaying Morgan to make a play on the ball.
Glen Coffee
Looked just like the 1-cut hard nose runner we saw at Alabama. Expect this Coffee seemed stronger (no pun intended) then the college player. I've had him being a successful backup since day one, but if he ever gets his chance to start he just might surprise.
Brit Miller
Illinois Linebacker converted to an NFL FB, as of now, you made the right decision. Could possibly make the roster especially since Keasey looks like he's lost for the preseason.
Kory Sheets
Showed off his wheels. Would like to see him Kick Return instead of Spurlock next game.
Offensive Line
Hopefully can improve. 4 Sacks given up. I know they weren't all the OL's fault but DENVER of all teams was putting a good amount of pressure on our quarterbacks.
Secondary
Yes we got 3 picks but Orton was passing the ball right to us. Nate and Bly were both received early gifts this year, Reggie Smith on the other hand looked really good. I never thought much of Smith, but after that game with the leaping INT he had on Orton then the pick on the 2 point attempt late in the game to pretty much seal it. Eddie Royal was killing our defense with his speed, just preseason but doesn't bode well when you have Boldin and Fitz for the season opener. Word-Daniels got picked on all night, Terrail Lambert though most likely won't make the team but he's someone to watch.
Defensive Line
There was no pass rush. Denver does have a really good offensive line though.

Falcons @ Chiefs
Difficulty: All-Pro
Hopefully EA has taken care of the glitches and hopefully breaking big runs like they showed in the video isn't all that easy.
